Meet Entry Procedure
The D.U.K.E.S attend an average of two meets per month. Only one meet per month is required, but swimmers are encouraged to attend as many meets as possible. Meets are held mostly on weekends and vary in location, duration, and number of swimmers.

Please read meet information sent by email or on this site and keep it available because it will be needed up to the date of the meet. The last page(s) will list the events  for that meet. Girls events will be listed on the left side (odd numbered events) and boys on the right side (even numbered events).  Print out the event page and circle the events that the swimmer would like to swim. Write the swimmer’s name on the page and write a check to the Denver DUKES for the appropriate amount. Bring the event list  and check to the coach by the due date. The event sheet is required for coach Gray to  know which events the swimmer  intends to swim.  Please be aware that certain events are offered on certain days so if swimmers can only attend one day of the meet, make sure only events for that day are chosen. The coach reserves the right to edit entries. It is preferable that each meet be a blend of events that are comfortable and familiar to the swimmer as well as those that are new and challenging.

Pearls of wisdom for meets
Warm up is not optional! Every swimmer is to be behind the blocks, ready to swim, at the assigned warm up time. If a swimmer is late or misses warm up, a late fee may apply. Athletes missing this requirement will be responsible for their own warm up.

Buying a program(about $5) is immensely helpful in keeping track of what is going on in the water. Programs help athletes to be at their assigned event, in the right lane, at the right time, preventing missed events!

Swimmers must report to their coach before and after each race. Coaches will remind swimmers of certain techniques or race strategies to implement before the swim and will review what the swimmer did well and what needs work following the race.

Seating at meets is first come first served. There is no assigned team seating. As more meets are attended, families will be able to find the “good” spots.

What to bring
Meets can be quite long. There is a four hour time limit for the 12 and under age group sessions, not including warm up, and most meets run right up against that time constraint. There is no time restriction for the older swimmers although most meets try to stay close to the four hour mark. There can be a lot of down time between events, so bring books, games, or homework to do during these inactive periods.  Also bring snacks. Most meets will have a concession stand but there are not always healthy options. If your swimmer is swimming multiple events, bring an extra towel or towels.

Nerves
Expect swimmers to be nervous. Coach Gray had knots in his stomach before EVERY race that he ever swam. Nervousness however, is not an acceptable reason to miss a race. Swimmers are expected to swim all the events that they are entered in.
